Self-actualization is described as the desire to become everything one is capable of becoming. This concept was popularized by Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), an American Psychologist, in his #Hierarchyofneeds theory where self-actualization is the pinnacle of personal development. This pyramid suggests that we pursue personal growth, meaning, and self-expression beyond just meeting basic needs. The pyramid is as follows; physiological needs (food, water, shelter), safety needs (security, stability), love and belonging (relationships, connection), esteem (respect, confidence), and finally, self-actualization (personal growth and fulfillment). This theory suggests that a person without basic human needs, may find it harder to obtain self-actualization...if at all. The healing journey is constant but there are multiple starting points. I've compiled several journal prompts to help you get started by exploring all aspects of your life according to the Hierarchy of Needs.
Physiological
Start asking yourself the foundation questions. Are your basic needs being met? Nutrients, rest, sustainable shelter, habits, and physical safety are several basic self-care aspects many of us overlook.
Am I getting enough rest-physically and mentally?
When was the last time I felt fully rested?
What is my relationship with my body right now?
Do I feel physically safe in my current environment? Why or why not?
Do I move my body out of self-love or obligation?
How does the way I eat affect my energy and mood?

Safety
These prompts are designed to help you explore your sense of safety, both internally and externally based on physical safety, emotional security, financial stability, health, and predictability in daily life.
Are there any safety concerns in my life that I'm avoiding? What steps could I take to address them?
Do I feel financially stable right now? If not, what's contributing to the feeling?
What's my relationship with money; fear, freedom, control, trust or something else?
Who in my life makes me feel seen, safe, and accepted?
Do I feel physically healthy and secure in my body?
What changes could I make to create more structure and calm in my life?
Love/Belonging
This level includes friendships, family, intimacy, and community. As humans, we have a need to feel accepted, valued, and connected.
Do I feel worthy of love just as I am? If not, why?
Do I feel truly accepted and understood by my social circle?
Have I healed from my past experiences that disrupted my sense of belonging?
What kind of community am I craving right now?
In what ways can I be a better friend to myself?
How do I speak to myself when I'm struggling? Is it with compassion or criticism?
Esteem
This step centers around self-respect, confidence, achievement, recognition, personal competence, and feeling valued by self and others.
Do I respect myself in the choices I make each day? Why or why not?
What makes me feel proud of myself, regardless of what anyone thinks?
Whose approval do I seek the most and why?
What's one small action I can take today that will build confidence?
What's something unique about me that I used to hide, but now want to celebrate?
What activities or situations make me feel confident and capable?

Self - Actualization
The finale. Once you've mastered the prior steps, it's now time to explore your inner self, values, purpose, potential, and personal growth. These journal prompts require you to answer deep questions about who you are.
Who am I when no one is watching?
What brings me a sense of deep joy, regardless of the outcomes?
What am I naturally good at, and how can I use it to contribute to the world?
What is a limiting belief I've outgrown?
How can I make space for more creativity, connection, or meaning in my life?
How have I changed in the past year-mentally, emotionally, spiritually?
Self-actualized individuals tend to be authentic and true to themselves, have a strong sense of purpose, maintain deep relationships while valuing solitude, are self-aware and ethical, and focus on personal growth over external validation. This is a life-long process of achievements, passions, evolution, questions, and creativity. Living in alignment with your values has no final destination. I hope these journal prompts start you in the right direction to reaching your full potential. How do these questions make you feel? Are some questions hard to answer or take time to think about? Get the conversation started in the comments...I'd love to hear your thoughts! Take care and heal on!
